About Me

I've been working in the software industry for nearly 15 years and have worn several different hats in that time. Initially I was a Java Software Engineer but I quickly ended up performing the duties of a System Administrator as I insited on running Linux instead of the corporate standard of Windows. Soon I was administering databases and engineering distributed systems.

With the advent of Site Reliability Engineering I now have a title that matches what I've always been doing. By combining my software & systems engineering skills with my system & database administration experience I now work with public cloud providers helping organisations to migrate and make better use of them.

As a Data Engineer I have been working with organisations to help them adopt Big Data and Machine Learning, often as part of a cloud adoption project. I assist in educating engineers in the paradigm shift from the traditional model-first warehousing approach to the model-on-demand data lake approach.

I'm an advocate of open source software having made use of it exhaustively throughout my career. I have made contributions to PostgreSQL, YAWL and Terraform.

  • Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the Universe is winning.
